The historic centre of Calitri is like a geometric canvas, with its stack of white and ochre rectangular houses that rise to the top of the hill. It is advisable to lose oneself in its steep streets and vaulted passages to appreciate its beauty and authenticity. The walk reveals some elegant palaces and various religious buildings. The tuff hill of Calitri was dug by man with cavities that served as dwellings or warehouses and stables for the richest who had palaces built on the upper levels. Nowadays, these canteens are still partially integrated into the houses or transformed into restaurants and cheese and sausage maturing cellars. Although most of the village was skilfully restored after the 1980 earthquake, an area at the top of the hill is still abandoned, with houses open to all winds that have not been emptied of their furniture...
