Situated in the Ofanto Valley and perched on top of a rock, this village, it is said, was originally called "Pietra Pagana", or pagan stone. This would tend to explain the long survival of pagan rites in Pescopagano, as evidenced by the idols and inscriptions to the god Silvano discovered in the nearby town of Idolari, a few steps from the Guana stream.
