Muro Lucano is an entrenched town on the Marmo Platano at 654 meters above sea level. It was built on the ruins of the ancient city of Numistro, the scene of a battle between Hannibal and Marcellus in 210 B.C., of which a small Roman bridge still remains. The city was damaged by the earthquake of 1694 and partly rebuilt. The castle of Muro is said to have been the home of Queen JoanI of Naples, who was murdered in her bed. The town is full of strange stories that go hand in hand with the atmosphere of an isolated mountain village where history and religion go hand in hand. Muro is the birthplace of San Gerardo Maiella, patron saint of Basilicata.
