With just over 400 inhabitants, the small municipality of Maià de Montcal is located in the easternmost part of La Garrotxa, not far from Besalú, on the border of the Alt Empordà and the Pla de l'Estany. It is crossed by the River Maià, which joins the River Fluvià a few kilometres further south, and is made up of seven localities: Le Quer, Les Ferreries, Dosquers, Bruguers, Jonqueres, Llorenç and Pocafarina. The main tourist attractions in this part of the territory are the Romanesque remains of Dosquers and Maià, including the church of Sant Vincenç de Maià (10th century), with its pretty, well-preserved gate, and the Dosquers castle.
