Situated just a stone's throw from the freeway to France, Hostalric is the smallest municipality in La Selva: 3 km² with a population of around 4,300. This modest size only makes the concentration of history to be found here all the more appreciable, with its 600 meters of imposing wall punctuated by eight extremely well-preserved defensive towers. Another advantage of Hostalric's geographical location is that it is an excellent gateway to the comarca of La Selva, and an essential stopover between the coast and the Pyrenees, in a place that has been the only natural passage between Girona and Barcelona since ancient times.
