The fortress is the town's main symbol and one of the greatest cultural landmarks of the 18th century. Situated on the summit of an ancient volcano, the former medieval castle of the Viscounts of Cabrera dates back to the 12th century and was used, among other things, to control the Royal Road, halfway between Girona and Barcelona.
