Founded by the Romans under the name of Iluro, Mataró preserves important archaeological remains. The city began to grow in 1848 with the inauguration of the first railway line in the Iberian Peninsula. It became an important industrial centre. The great modernist constructions of Mataró date from this period. Many of them are the work of the architect Josep Puig i Cadafalch, including the Casa Coll i Regàs, which has become one of the symbols of the city. Today, Mataró is a very dynamic city that seduces visitors with its marina, promenade and of course its beaches.
