Situated at the foot of the Garraf Massif, Sitges is a former fishing village that has become one of the favourite holiday resorts for Catalan families, but also the favourite spot for many Barcelonans from the first sunny weekends. Towards the end of the 18th century, a few reckless people from the village began to dream of fortune and distant horizons in the "Indies" of Christopher Columbus. These "indianos", as they were called, were numerous to try their luck in Cuba. This was the case of Facundo Bacardí, who built an empire thanks to his innovative rum filtering technique. On their return, from the 19th century onwards, they had sumptuous residences built in Sitges, in keeping with the taste of the time, between modernism and eclecticism. Some beautiful examples of these splendid constructions can still be seen in the Carrer de l'Illa de Cuba (Street of the Island of Cuba), whose name pays homage to these modern-day conquistadors. At the end of the 19th century, it was the silhouette and especially the light of Sitges, which seduced painters like Santiago Rusiñol, that made it a major artistic centre. Today, the charm of its bay and old village, its beaches and the mild climate attract the most diverse visitors.
