What a surprising charm, with its old town, its ramparts and its winding cobbled streets! Of Greek origin(monos polis means "one city"), Monopoli came under Venetian rule in 1484, which allowed it to experience an economic boom and to distinguish itself as a port city, alongside Bari and Brindisi. The historic centre is characterised by its churches, which appear unexpectedly in the heart of the alleys, and whose yellow tuff stone contrasts with the whiteness of the houses. Through a stone arch you reach the small port with its red and blue boats, bordered by a palace with an elegant neo-Gothic loggia and the castle of Charles V.
