Anchored at the end of a long promontory, Gallipoli seems to emerge suddenly from the Ionian Sea. In the foreground of the ancient Kallipolis ("beautiful city") stand the walls which for centuries protected this island of white houses from the threats of the East. In the distance, you can see the imposing, squat silhouette of the towers that guard the old city. The town has become a commercial centre with a busy port and is surrounded by vineyards and olive groves on the land side and the most beautiful beaches in the region on the coast. Gallipoli owes its fame not only to its numerous architectural remains, but also to the Neapolitan atmosphere of the narrow streets of its old centre, where the sound of the sea mingles with the voices of the people. This particular atmosphere justifies the summer dynamism of Gallipoli, which can be seen in its hotels, sports tourism, bars, restaurants and open-air discos. People sometimes come from far away to taste the festive exuberance of this bewitching city. The new town, with its ultramodern high buildings, contrasts sharply with the old centre of Gallipoli. The surrounding beaches are among the best in the region, and for all these reasons Gallipoli is a very good place to stay.
