"It's not Cadiz or Mexico City, the whitest city in the world, it's Ostuni" The formula is not an advertising slogan but a quote from famous phrases dedicated to the city by illustrious visitors. All the inhabitants will tell you this again, because the " città bianca " is, according to them, a "miraggio di luce e di calce", a mirage of light and lime. It is rare to find a city that combines such a luminous whiteness with the geometry of its forms. Built on three hills on the edge of the Murge, at 218 meters above sea level, Ostuni is surrounded by a vast countryside covered with olive trees, fig trees and vineyards, just a stone's throw from the Adriatic Sea. The city is not lacking in historical gems either: an ancient Stulnium mentioned by Pliny the Elder and Ptolemy, a city of Messapian origin, its monuments reflect its different periods: from the Messapian acropolis to the city surrounded by walls built by the Angevins, then reinforced during the Aragonese period (1487-1507), to the rococo style of some churches, through the beautiful cathedral ... All this under the watchful eye of the patron saint of the city, Sant'Oronzo, whose statue is enthroned in Piazza della Libertà.The city of Ostuni can be visited in half a day at most, but you will certainly want to stay longer, just for the pleasure of strolling through its white streets. Plan to spend at least one evening here to watch the sunset over the city, which is adorned with golden reflections, and over the sea of olive trees that surrounds it and disappears into the horizon.
