A must-see for readers of Jules Verne's Journey to the Center of the Earth. The Castellana caves, listed as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO, are among the ten most beautiful in the world and the deepest in Europe. Formed by the subterranean action of the waters in the Upper Cretaceous period, they represent the most spectacular example of a karstic network in the Murge territory. The caves were only explored in 1938 by the speleologist Franco Anelli, when the locals used them as a dumping ground! Today you can walk through the 3 km long gallery that goes down to a depth of 70 m to the beautiful White Cave.
