Located 36 km from Modena, Serramazzoni is considered the gateway to the Apennines. The town is popular for its many hiking and mountain bike trails and for the Sassi di Varana, volcanic rocks located at the edge of the town of Varana, 6 and 12 meters high, popular for climbing. 4 km from Serramazzoni, the village of Monfestino, on a balcony above the plain, is dominated by an ancient and powerful fortress. In the direction of Cerreto, there is the Pieve di Rocca San Maria, built in sandstone around the 11th century. Inside is preserved one of the oldest bells in the province of Modena, dating back to 1370.
