Set on the right bank of the Ebro River, Mallén is a small municipality of 3 400 inhabitants. After its re-conquest by Alphonse I in the th century, it was given to the knights of the order of Saint John of Jerusalem, who will exercise their authority over the city until the early th century. In the th century, they built Señora Señora de los Angeles church, a mixture of Romanesque, Gothic and Baroque elements, as well as a fortified castle that is now extinct. Thereafter, the city is being ransacked by successive conflicts, first the succession war at the beginning of the th century, and then the war of Independence at the beginning of the th century. After the expulsion of the French in 1813, the stones of the demolished castle will be used to reconstruct several buildings in the city.
