Soria is a small provincial capital of less than 40,000 inhabitants, rich in history and still pleasant despite the oppressive development of the suburbs that surround it. Wedged between two hills on the banks of the Duero, it is both charming and romantic, and has been the source of inspiration for many poets, such as the Andalusian Antonio Machado. This town, which is not very touristy, offers curious visitors a rich architectural heritage, such as the ruins of a castle, a pleasant medieval centre full of Romanesque houses and churches, and one of the most beautiful cloisters in Spain.Calle El Collado is Soria's main street, between Plaza Mariano Granados and Plaza Mayor, with its shops, pastry shops and tapas bars. The Paseo del Espolón, which borders La Alameda, is the main shopping street of the city.
