A castle and walls reflected in the waters of the Lozoya: that's the first thing you see of Buitrago. But this village has had an eventful history. The Romans called it Litabrun. Then the Arabs surrounded it with walls. In 1085, Buitrago was taken from them by the Christians, who repopulated it with cattle breeders. By the end of the 15th century, there were two synagogues and a large Jewish community. When Napoleon's French troops withdrew after the War of Independence, they burned over a hundred houses and most of the buildings. Today, Buitrago de Lozoya is no more than a peaceful village, where tourists and Madrilenians take refuge from the hustle and bustle of the capital.
