Viana is the final point of the Way of St. James in Navarre. Geography and history have made it an important city, and it is in Viana that Caesar Borgia, the son of Pope Alejandro VI, is buried. The town was founded on a hill at the beginning of the 13th century by Sancho el Fuerte to face Castile. Its strategic position at the gates of La Rioja led to many battles between the different kings who wanted to take it over. In the Calle Mayor is the Gothic church of Santa Maria, with the sepulchre of Caesar Borgia in its interior. It has a Renaissance portal, one of the most beautiful in Spain
