This is where the great painter Francisco de Zurbarán was born and this will be the guiding thread of Fuente de Cantos' visit. Surrounded by a gently corrugated landscape where vineyards, olive trees and wheat fields alternate with pastures, this white town of about 4,900 inhabitants, located south of Badajoz province, with a slightly Andalusian look, is beginning to be mentioned in history during its remission conquest by Christians in 1240, even though many vestiges attest to a continuing human presence since Prehistory. It will be Lacunis for the Romans and Laqant or Alcant for the Arabs, and will fall under the jurisdiction of the order of Santiago, reconquest at the end of the sixteenth century. This is the period of expansion of the city which, thanks to a significant increase in its population, is becoming one of the main centers of the present Extremadura, which has created many religious foundations: three convents, three hospitals, more than 20 hermitages… As was the case throughout its history, its main resources, land, crops and pastures remain the foundation of its current economy, including livestock.
