On the banks of the Guadiana River and a few kilometers from Portugal, this provincial capital of more than 150,000 inhabitants is the largest economic and commercial center in Extremadura. Since its foundation in 875, its specificity as a border city has given it a marked military character, as evidenced by the walls that have defended the city, in constant opposition to the Portuguese fortress of Helvas. As a result, its walled enclosure is now the longest in Spain and its citadel, Alcazaba, one of the most impressive. A walk in the heart of the old city will make you discover its cathedral, its alleys and its monuments, without forgetting the superb Plaza Alta and itscolorful Mudejar-stylecasas . And also its birds, cormorants, grey or crimson herons, glossy ibis... (140 species) since the city is crossed by an urban ZEPA, protection zone. It is also the ideal starting point to discover the Tierra de Barros, Merida and the Cornalvo Natural Park
