Pretty village of 7,500 inhabitants, planted on the top of a hill in the middle of the Alentejano plain. From the 14th century castle, there is a beautiful view of the surrounding countryside. The town, whose name means "the land of kings", was founded by the Sabines in the 2nd century BC. The Romans also passed through here, as evidenced by the ruins of the Roman temple of Santana do Campo (2nd century AD), dedicated to an uncertain deity (thought to be Carneus Calanticensis). Arraiolos is known for the production of woollen carpets. This art was developed by Moorish weavers who settled there after being expelled from Lisbon.
