If we know that this commune is home to the summit of Angliru, one of the mythical steps of the Spanish cycling Vuelta, there will be a summit and a climb. And that's true. But the erosion has helped to give it a contrasting relief, marked by peaks but also parades, caves or precipices… from 1,775 m, for its highest point, at 300 m, for the lowest. The commune alternates thus green valleys and mountains to the very disgraded like the Sierra de Aramo. The population of over 2,000 people is divided between urbanization encompassing La Vega, its capital, and La Ará and small villages or towns, scattered on the mountain side. The mines have also marked its history: copper and cobalt, exploited from the Neolithic onwards, and of course coal in the 1960 s and whose extraction was much more resilient after the severe crisis known by this sector to lead to the arrest in 2015 of the last active well, the Pozo Monsacro. Today, livestock farming, mainly cattle, remains the main activity of the commune. It is up to you to discover these two identities of Riosa: its heritage marked by its mining remains and its sometimes grandiose landscapes. For them, spring will be the ideal time, with mountains to velvety green and cows that graze or circulate quietly on the roads, without worrying about leaving you the passage.
