For three centuries, this town with less than 11,000 inhabitants was the administrative capital of the gold mines of Las Médulas and the Maragaitera. The region of the Maragatos occupies 400 km² with a totally unique architecture, gastronomy and way of life. Among the customs is the covada: after giving birth, the wife resumes her activities while the husband is in bed. It is also the woman who carries out the most arduous agricultural work. In addition to the Archbishop's Palace, you can visit the Chocolate Museum or go under the city for a guided tour of the Roman archaeological remains.
