About 35,000 inhabitants. Bragança is located at 650 meters above sea level. Once the stronghold of the House of Bragança, which ruled Portugal from 1640 to 1910, it is nowadays a small student town, especially interesting for its ramparts and its historic centre. The castle, built in 1187, consists of a wall and several round towers enclosing a square keep. The citadel of Bragança is one of the best preserved in the country, and its small houses are still inhabited. The city is quite a night owl, probably influenced by its Spanish neighbours.
