Linares is a small village in the municipality of Proaza. Typical and picturesque, Linares de Proaza has preserved some examples of traditional architecture as well as a church dedicated to Santa María Magdalena. Founded in the 13th century, Linares was once an obligatory stop on the pilgrimage route. At that time, hospitals were built to care for lepers and shelters were built to accommodate pilgrims. Linares de Proaza was a crossroads that allowed to go in two directions: one was to Oviedo in order to visit the cathedral of San Salvador de Oviedo and the other was to Grado to go directly to Santiago.
