"Wine of kings, king of wines," the sweet wines of Tokaj were already appreciated by Louis XIV, who consumed them at the court of Versailles. These vineyards, stretching over 87 km in northeastern Hungary, backed by the Slovak border, rank first among the country's 22 wine regions. The summer sun gilds furmint and hárslevelű, two indigenous grape varieties, rooted in loess, enriched with volcanic minerals. Tállya is a pretty village of 1,800 inhabitants (and 800 hectares of vineyards) 25 km north of Tokaj and 7 km from Mád. The village has a charming hotel-restaurant and good wineries, especially those of Kaláka.
