On the eastern edge of Slovakia, on the border with Poland and Ukraine, Poloniny Park is off the beaten tourist track. It is 80% primary forest, mainly beech. It's the ideal place to discover its flora and fauna, teeming with rare species. Summer is the best time to explore this unique park. In winter, the region offers some great cross-country skiing opportunities, even if the cold and the amount of snow don't make transport easy. Last but not least, this Ruthenian region still boasts some fine examples of folk architecture, including pretty wooden churches.
