Sabinov is a quiet and pleasant town that has preserved some of the monuments of its rich past around its central square. It is a good starting point for excursions in the surrounding area, although many visitors will prefer its neighbours Prešov or Bardejov. The first traces of the town date back to 1405, when it was elevated to the status of a free royal town and, at the end of the 15th century, became a member of the Pentapolitana, a union of the five towns of eastern Slovakia (also including Bardejov, Košice, Levoča and Prešov). Sabinov then prospered between the 16th and 18th centuries before going through a period of decline from the 19th century onwards, until it fell into oblivion.
