Framed by two hills, the small town of Namchi is often overlooked by travellers, who only linger to visit its monuments at Samdruptse and Solophok. The capital of southern Sikkim contrasts with other Indian cities in its layout, centred around a pleasant pedestrian square (Central Park) with benches and magnificent trees. Perched at an altitude of 1,400 metres, Namchi is the gateway to western Sikkim.
