130 km north of Gangtok. Altitude: 3,500 m. The Yumthang valley, on the border between Sikkim and Tibet, is a paradise for nature lovers. It is home to some twenty species of rhododendron. To visit this region, you'll need to be part of an organized group and have hired an agency from Gangtok. The hot springs of Yumthang make a pleasant stopover. The small town of Lachung, at an altitude of 2,700 metres, is the gateway to the valley. On the way to Katao, don't miss the Nyingma monastery, founded in 1880, with its superb views.
