population: approx. 2,000 Altitude: 1,750 m. Welcome to Sikkim's first capital! Yuksom is a charming little village surrounded by cardamom plantations, and the last village you can visit without a special permit. The village is peaceful and quiet. In this lush, colorful and flower-filled natural setting (rhododendrons, bougainvilleas, etc.), beautiful walks await you. A word of warning: power cuts are frequent and all shops close at 8pm. Yuksom is where the three lamas of the Nyingmapa order introduced Tibetan Buddhism and where the first king of Sikkim was crowned in 1641. The road between Pelling and Yuksom is simply magnificent.
