population: 49,400. Altitude: 1,250 m. With its 1,046 square kilometers, Kalimpong covers a large area, unlike Darjeeling, which is a town concentrated in a small, clearly defined space. This high-altitude resort is a pleasant stopover on the way to nearby Sikkim. Named after thepong of Kalim, a minister of the King of Sikkim, Darjeeling is a blend of styles from Tibet, Nepal, Sikkim and Bhutan. Before the Chinese invaded Tibet, great wool fairs were held here. Many merchants came down from the roof of the world to trade with the Indians. Kalimpong is a small town that may seem repulsive at first glance. But don't be fooled by appearances, it's a great place to live and there are some great walks to be had. The city center is quite hectic, so it's best to stay in a hotel that's a little further away.
