population: 4,645. Altitude: 950 m. This peaceful village is the capital of the North Sikkim district. Founded in 1903, its name comes from the Lepcha community word mangaan, meaning "hidden". Today, it is mainly inhabited by a community of Nepalese origin. It boasts sumptuous natural landscapes. Beyond Mangan, the Yumthang valley can be reached via a travel agency. Permits can be renewed at the office of the Superintendent of Police. The view of Kangchenjunga from the Pakshak viewpoint, 4 km from the village, is quite simply one of the finest in Sikkim.
