A border town with India, Phuentsholing is a busy, multi-ethnic crossing point. It is separated from its Indian neighbor, Jaigaon, by the Bhutan Gate. Phuentsholing has a few tourist sites of interest, but the town is quite polluted and a far cry from the zenitude of Thimphu. It takes at least 6 hours to drive the 176 km from Phuentsholing to the Bhutanese capital. Leaving the city and heading north, the road winds its way over mountains and high valleys through a lush landscape of tree fern forests and many exotic species.
