The very name of this famous town perched at an altitude of 2,040 m conjures up a host of images. This former British health resort with a population of 132,000 is associated with the many tea plantations in the surrounding area. Kangchenjunga, the world's third-highest peak at 8,586 m, stands proudly on the horizon, seemingly watching over the town whose name derives from Dorje Ling, "City of Lightning". Known worldwide for its teas, which fetch high prices, Darjeeling is a popular destination for Westerners and Indian tourists alike, who spend their vacations here far from the heat of the rest of the country. That said, tourism doesn't detract too much from the town's charm, which remains extremely appealing. The population, mostly Gorkha, is welcoming and the landscapes around the town are magnificent. In the evening, Darjeeling fades fast and restaurants close early. The town is also famous for its steam train, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
