Located in the eastern part of the Sierra de Queixa, where the Manzaneda summit reaches 1,800 m, this city of 2,191 inhabitants is now a high area of rural tourism but also of mountains. Founded in the thirteenth century and became an important center of the Galician nobility in the nineteenth century (with the island of Toja), the village also contains older remains. Since Roman historians named him as the place of the Tiburios tribe and it was an important passage from the Vía Nova, a Roman road built by Emperor Trajan. The Roman bridge, which crosses the river Bibei, is one of the best preserved in Galicia. In the old quarter, very well restored, you will notice emblematic spaces such as the Torre del Reloj, Praza do Grifo and do Pilón or Casa del Marqués. And in the surroundings you can see the monastery of San Salvador de Sobrado in Trives, located in the same name and built by the counts of Lemos. Mountain land obliges, the city is specialized in curadas (mountain meat) and produces bica. A local cake acting as an identity sign. The custom was to give a guest a gift before he left. And the bica has its party, the last Sunday in July, celebrated with great pomp in Cabeza Grande de Manzaneda, the only Galician winter station.
