Nestled in the eastern part of the Queixa mountain range, with the summit of the Manzaneda at 1,800 m, this city of more than 2,000 inhabitants is located halfway between Orense and Ponferrada. Today it is a mecca for rural and mountain tourism. Founded in the 13th century, it became an important centre of the Galician nobility in the 19th century with the island of La Toja. There are also older remains in the village. Since Roman historians named it as the place of the Tiburios tribe and it was an important passage of the vía Nova, a Roman road built by Emperor Trajan. Today we can see its traces with the Roman bridge that crosses the river Bibei, surely one of the best preserved in Galicia. In the old quarter, which has been very well restored, you will undoubtedly appreciate emblematic spaces such as the Torre del Reloj, the Praza do Grifo and do Pilón or the Casa del Marqués. And in the surrounding area, you can visit the Monastery of San Salvador de Sobrado de Trives, located in the town of the same name and built by the Counts of Lemos. A land of mountains, the town specialises in curada carne, delicious mountain meat and produces bica. A smooth and tasty local cake that serves as a sign of identity. It was customary to give it to a guest before he left. And bica has its feast day on the last Sunday in July, celebrated with great pomp and circumstance in Cabeza Grande de Manzaneda, Galicia's only winter resort.
