Built two millennia ago, the ancient Lucus Augusti is encircled, for more than 2 km, by a spectacular wall. Preserved in its original state since the 3rd century, it was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2000. The city stretches along the banks of the river Miño, which offers superb walks. Lugo and its municipality are located in the centre of the Biosphere Reserve, known as Terras do Miño. A detour to the interior of Galicia is therefore a must. Especially since this provincial capital of less than 99,000 inhabitants hides a picturesque maze of medieval alleys in the heart of its walls.
