In recent years, the small village of Beipu has sought to attract tourists by showcasing its hakka cultural heritage. The Hakkas now make up nearly 15% of Taiwan's population. Many of them still live in the villages of Hsinchu and Miaoli Counties, and a visit to Beipu allows you to immerse yourself for a day in a rustic atmosphere full of history. Surrounded by hills where the famous Dongfang Meiren tea plants grow - one of the best oolong teas in the region, appreciated even by Queen Elizabeth - Beipu and its 98% hakka inhabitants seem to have stopped in time. In the main street, you can drink a cup of leicha, the traditional hakka tea.
