Although Taichung, which in Chinese means "the centre of Taiwan", was founded in 1721 as Ta-Tun for Big Mound, recent archaeological discoveries have located the first inhabitants of the Taichung region (the Ping Pu tribe) 4,000 years ago. Taichung's microclimate and geographical location - in the plain - have favoured its settlement; it is to date the third largest city on the island with a population of over 1 million inhabitants. Taichung's climate and cultural dynamism make it a popular university town, but also a good pied-à-terre for touring the region. With its dynamism, its numerous restaurants, bars and clubs, Taichung is a great destination.
