While most of the region is covered by mountains, Hualien lies on the coastal plain. The city is also famous for its marble, quarried from the Taroko Gorge; the noble material is omnipresent in the city: hotels, temples and stores are adorned with it. Hualien is the stronghold of the ami tribe, of which there are some 80,000 in the city.A popular tourist destination before the earthquake, because of its proximity to the Taroko Gorge, Hualien is above all a city where life was good before the earthquake. The city's proximity to the sea and the mountains, coupled with the intimacy of its downtown area, made life very pleasant. Many tourists on their way to the national park have stopped off here, and are sure to return in the near future.
