TEMPLE OF CONFUCIUS AND MAUSOLEUM OF THE MARTYRS

While the other temples dedicated to the sage on the island are of Ming or Qing architecture, this one stands out from the crowd since it is based on the extremely rare Song architecture. Built in 1976, it is imposing and very colourful. Next door on Li-Hsing Street, the Mausoleum of the Martyrs is a classical Chinese palace that pays homage to 72 Chinese patriots beheaded by order of a Manchu court in 1911. The republican revolution had just begun on the continent.
