Nicknamed the little Shanghai of Taiwan for its flourishing past as a mining city, Jiufen is isolated from the coast by the hills (Mount Keelung, an extinct volcano, peaks at 588 m), which is why for a long time it remained only a small village ignored by all. In 1890, a gold mine was discovered there. Mining reached its peak in the 1930s. At the end of the Second World War, the mines were depleted. The small town has since become one of Taiwan's major tourist attractions over the past twenty years, and rightly so.
