Founded in the 18th century, Caguas is the largest city in the Cordillera Central, as well as being its northern and western gateway. Known as Ciudad criolla, it is home to less than 130,000 inhabitants, making it one of the most important cities in Puerto Rico in terms of population, but also one of the most modern and dynamic. It is named after a Taino Indian chief named Caguax, who was among the first to convert to Christianity. In the 20th century, sugar production was the main industry of the city, as well as tobacco. From San Juan, Caguas can be reached in half an hour by car.
