San Juan's beginnings as a city date back to 1508. But it was not on the present site of Old San Juan that the future capital of Puerto Rico was born. The first houses and offices to administer the territory were established in Guaynabo, by Governor Juan Ponce de León. The small town was named Caparra, after his native province of Cáceres, Spain. But very soon the settlers felt too far from the island's main port, which they already commonly called Puerto Rico. Today, Guaynabo is a sports town with a population of 85,000. It has little tourist interest.
