Vega Alta and Vega Baja are two small towns that line the northern coast of Puerto Rico, a few miles east of Manati. Founded in 1775, the original village was divided into two parts, an upper one (La Vega Alta de Espinosa) and a lower one (La Vega Baja del Naranjal). The denominations ("high" and "low") refer to the side of the Cibuco River where each town is located, one being slightly higher than the other. The village of Vega Alta is also known for its kite contest in mid-April, as well as for its popular beach, Cerro Gordo, which is good for swimming, a rarity on the island's rugged northern coast
