Mayagüez is the third largest city in Puerto Rico. The downtown area, often disparaged by Puerto Ricans, is a pleasant surprise, provided you explore it a bit. The beautiful Nuestra Señora de Candelaria cathedral that stands in the main square is worth a look. There is not much to do from a tourist point of view, but Mayagüez can be used as a dormitory town to visit the West Coast. It is also an excellent starting point to discover some of the best diving sites in Puerto Rico, including Isla de Mona. For the charm, it is recommended to go to Cabo Rojo or Ríncon.
