Manatí was long ago known as " La Atenas de Puerto Rico " ("The Athens of Puerto Rico"), as it was in some ways the epicenter of the cultural and intellectual movement that was formed here in the early 20th century. It also has very fertile land that has made it an important agricultural area for the cultivation of pineapples, as well as sugarcane and coffee production. The karstic landscape of the coast in the Manatí region offers fascinating natural pools open to the ocean that comes rushing in: Mar Chiquita, La Poza de las Mujeres and La Cueva de las Golondrinas, for the most famous.
