This small seaside village owes its name to Louis XV, who granted the first land in the area. Fishing posts were built as early as 1697, but General Wolfe's soldiers burned everything down in 1758 during the English conquest of New France. Today, Mont-Louis is renowned for its fishing harbour and fish processing plant, Cusimer, as well as for its traditional local smokehouse, Atkins & Frères (a stop at the store is a must). Mont-Louis is one of three villages that make up the municipality of Saint-Maxime-du-Mont-Louis, the other two being L'Anse-Pleureuse and Gros-Morne.
