The picturesque village of Ein Kerem, 2 km southwest of Mount Herzl, is one of Israel's hidden treasures. In this ancient village, nestled at the bottom of a valley lined with pine and Lebanese cedar trees, traces of human occupation have been found dating back to 6000 B.C. It is also said that St. John the Baptist was born here and that Mary drank from the spring. From the end of the 19th century, several Christian congregations established convents here. Although integrated into Jerusalem, Ein Kerem retains its village character. Today, the village is inhabited by a lively community of artists, which gives it its slightly bohemian character.
