According to Christian tradition, Ein Kerem is the birthplace of St. John the Baptist, son of Zechariah and Mary's cousin Elizabeth. The New Testament tells of Mary's Visitation to Elizabeth when they were both pregnant. During this encounter, Mary is said to have drunk from the fountain to refresh herself. This is why the fountain has become a place of Christian pilgrimage. The spring is located in the center of the village beneath the minaret of a mosque.
